What is culture and why is important?

In this course you will find out what “culture” is as it pertains to communication between people from different countries. You will also discover what your own national cultural tendencies are and understand how knowing this can help you to adapt your communication to be more effective.

 

Goals

  • Deal with a variety of cultural values and their impact on the workplace
  • Be more effective in working with colleagues whose national culture is different from your own

 

Partecipants

This course is designed for managers of all levels and backgrounds and professionals who work in a multi-cultural, multi-national environment where they have frequent contact with colleagues from other cultures.

 

Topics

Developing cultural self-awareness

We will see the differences between cultures: collectivist and individualistic cultures, masculine and feminine cultures, uncertainty avoidance, power distance, chronemics. We will also learn how to anticipating cultural misunderstanding: cultural influences on verbal language and nonverbal behaviour encoding and decoding, time and space, fate and personal responsibility, face and face-saving, nonverbal communication.

Approach

A combination of group work, discussion, role-play and simulation.
